Do you enjoy learning while you are traveling?
We planned to join a boat tour narrated by one of the park rangers that is only offered on two days each week. Our
only option was our last day at Indiana Dunes National Park. Although the weather didn't cooperate, we made the
best of it.
When we left the dock, the temperatures were rather cool and, by the end of the cruise, it was raining pretty hard.
Fortunately, the area where we were seated on the second floor of the boat was mostly covered, so we were able
to avoid getting drenched. The ranger did an excellent job of sharing some of the history of the park in a way that
grabbed the attention of both kids and adults.
Fun fact: A popular sand dune that stood in the late 1800s in what is today's national park was known as Hoosier
Slide. Companies like "Ball" (the company that makes the glass jars for canning) learned that the sand could be
used for making glass. If you've ever seen the old blue tinted Ball glass jars, it was likely made out of glass from
this now extinct dune.
