According to legend, the land on Scott's Bluff beside the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, Louisiana had been occupied by two Indian tribes. A conflict over the "ownership" of hunting grounds between the Houma and Bayougoula Tribes was settled and a pole made of cypress wood was used to mark the boundary. It is said that explorers later dubbed the pole "le baton rouge". Although the original stick is long since gone, a Red Stick sculpture now stands at the same point.

Social Media Description

I knew that the translation of "Baton Rouge" from French to English was "Red Stick". I had no idea that there was a commemorative stick in the city nor anything about the meaning of the name.
