Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore | Michigan

Running Down the Dunes to Lake Michigan

Driving the 7 1/2 mile long Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a must for anyone visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Without a doubt, the most crowded of the stops along the route is at the Lake Michigan Overlook. The view of the sand dune and the lake is amazing - but even more so is watching the risk takers tackle the dune. It looks quite easy to run down the extremely steep dune to the lake ... but getting back up is a much longer story!

Are you a risk taker?

We made a last minute change to our plans based on a recommendation from fellow travelers. Two women that we talked to couldn't say enough about Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We realized that it was on our driving route, and would actually give us two shorter driving days rather than one long day. Although we didn't have much time, we were excited to see a highly recommended place that we didn't even know existed!

We spent most of our afternoon driving the scenic drive. We loved the view of the dune and lake from the Lake Michigan Overlook. Even more fun was watching the risk takers run down the very steep dune into Lake Michigan. After making their way down, the uphill climb back to the top looked far more difficult and took much more time! (The signs along the top of the dune read, "Warning: Avoid getting stuck at the bottom! Lake levels are high - the only way out is up. Rescues cost $3,000. Keep yourself and our rescuers out of danger.)

What types of risks are you willing to take when traveling?
