Reportedly built in just eight months between 1126 and 1127, fortifications were constructed to enclose and protect the Medina of Marrakech. At the time, the structure was among the longest enclosures around a city. Due to growth of the city, the walls were expanded but today surround only the central core of Marrakech. Originally a total of twelve babs (gates) allowed entry and exit to the walled city and defensive towers allowed for protection of the city.

We've always enjoyed exploring walled cities, and Marrakech was no exception. We also had fun searching for the still standing gates (babs) throughout the Medina.
