Have you been to Lafayette, Louisiana?
During our 2019 trip to Louisiana, we paid a visit to the Acadian Village in Lafayette. It was the perfect opportunity to learn about the culture of the early settlers to the area. We wandered around the grounds of the village for just over 1 1/4 hours. It was interesting to learn how the Acadians made use of all that the land offered to live a simple but happy life.
Some of the homes and furnishings in the village are original and others are replicas. Moved from various locations in central Louisiana, they were set up to form a village typical to that which would have been found in years gone by. In addition to a collection of personal residences, the village is also home to a general store, blacksmith shop, chapel, schoolhouse and dentist's office.
Most buildings are open for visitation on a self-guided tour. Many have period furnishings and others are set up with displays helpful in telling the story of the Acadians. As we walked through the village, we were also on the lookout for local wildlife. We saw a snake, ducks, turtles and even an opossum during our visit.
