Explore Santorini's Prehistoric Town of Akrotiri

Excavations have been underway at the Prehistoric Town of Akrotiri on the Greek island of Santorini since 1867. Because of the volcanic ash that covered the abandoned town over 3,500 years ago, archaeological discoveries offer a well preserved look at life in this prehistoric settlement on the island. Today, visitors enjoy walkways with plenty of information for a complete DIY tour posted all around the covered site.

Where have you been impressed with remains from prehistoric days?

We went from the northwestern part of Santorini to the southwest. What started out as a return visit to two of the island's famous beaches, ended up with a longer than expected stop at the Prehistoric Town of Akrotiri.

Although we knew a little about the archeological site, we hadn't really planned on spending the time or money to visit. As it turned out, we arrived on a national holiday, so the entrance fee was waived for the day! Akrotiri is one of the most well preserved prehistoric sites on the Greek isles due to being covered by volcanic ash for so many years.

Do you have a favorite archeological dig site?
