It is estimated that alpacas first came to the United States in 1984. Alpacas are frequently confused with llamas, but at between 100 and 200 pounds, alpacas are smaller. They are quiet and shy, but also very curious and smart. They closely watch other alpacas in their herd and learn from and emulate them. Although each alpaca develops their own unique personality, they won't survive without having interaction with other alpacas.

What exotic animals do you like?
I fell in love with alpacas when we visited Peru, and just can't get enough of them. As luck would have it, there is a herd not far from our home. I couldn't stop taking photos at Grapetown Vineyard and Farm in Fredericksburg.
Fun facts: Alpacas can't really defend themselves - they have bottom teeth only (no top teeth) and their feet are padded so their kicks don't cause too much pain. When scared, they typically just try to run away!
