The High Dam in Aswan across Egypt's Nile River was built in an effort to increase the country's production of agriculture and hydroelectric power year round as well as attempt to reduce flooding. The downside of the dam's construction was the downstream flooding of some archaeological sites and relocation of others including the temples of Abu Simbel. In addition to temples, thousands of Egyptian and Sudanese residents were forced to relocate.

Quick stop to see the controversial Aswan High Dam. Learned some interesting history before our visit to the relocated Abu Simbel temples later in the week.
Stuff your eyes with wonder, live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. - Ray Bradbury
