One of the biggest attractions for folks exploring the Upper Rock Nature Reserve on the Rock of Gibraltar are the monkeys. The species is actually the Barbary Macaque (or Barbary Apes) who are originally from Northern Africa. The Apes Den is one of the locations where a large number of the apes congregate. It is located near the cable car's Middle Station (and is a short walk along the Old Queen's Road from St. Michael's Cave).

One of my favorite legends about the Barbary Apes of Gibraltar was Churchill's response after learning that the British would leave Gibraltar if the apes ever left. It is said that upon hearing that the ape population was declining, he had more mating pairs imported from Morocco!
