Gibraltar | Rock of Gibraltar | Upper Rock Nature Reserve | Strait of Gibraltar | Pillars of Hercules | Europe | Africa | History | Mythology
The body of water which separates Europe from Africa is known as the Strait of Gibraltar. According to Greek mythology, the strait (which also connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean) was created during one of the 12 "Labors of Hercules". It is said that Hercules split a mountain at the end of the world into two creating the two Pillars of Hercules. One side is now the Rock of Gibraltar and between the two pillars the Strait of Gibraltar was formed.
