Whether you walk, drive or ride the water-powered funicular, a visit to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga is a must. The sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019, is located on the slope of Mount Espinho in northern Portugal. Built over the course of 600+ years, a visit includes chapels housing the Stations of the Cross, sculptures, fountains, gardens and more. If you are up for some exercise, take a walk on the Stairway of the Five Senses!

First stop on our Braga and Guimaraes full-day tour was at the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte. We didn't have time for the hike up from the bottom of Mount Espinho, but we did walk down to one of the lowest viewpoints on the grounds (and back up too). Amazing architecture, decor and landscaping!
