There is a working farm not far from Austin - the Grapetown Vineyard and Farm in Fredericksburg Texas! The farm is home to a variety of rather exotic animals not common to the area - camels, zebras, bison and alpacas. (Plus, since it's longhorn country, there's some longhorns too!) For those interested in learning more about the workings of a farm (and wanting a chance to feed the animals), behind-the scenes tours are available.

Our day in the Texas hill country was full of surprises. What we thought was going to be an afternoon waiting for the hot air balloon glow ended up having plenty of options for spending our time. We had no idea that there was a winery and a polo field on the grounds - along with a working farm.
