Meeting the Aldabra Giant Tortoises of Zanzibar

Changuu Island (often referred to as Prison Island) is a small parcel of land found in the Indian Ocean. The island, reachable only by boat, lies about 3 1/2 miles northwest of Stone Town. Changuu Island has had an interesting and varied past which can be seen today in the form of ruins of the former prison and hospital. It's the population of Aldabra giant tortoises that lure most people to Prison Island these days.

Are you more interested in animals or history?

In less than 30 minutes, Mr. Bean took us by boat from Stone Town to Changuu Island where we got both! Of the 1 1/2 hours we spent on the island, over half was devoted to the giant tortoises which call the island home. In addition to petting and feeding the tortoises, we watched them eat, drink and mingle among themselves. We wrapped up our time exploring the historical ruins that give the land it's other names - Prison Island and Quarantine Island.

Fun fact: At least one of the tortoises living on Changuu Island is estimated to be over 200 years old!
