Climb Uphill in Portovenere to Chiesa di San Lorenzo

Just below Doria Castle, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo towers over the village of Porto Venere, Italy. Getting to the church requires an uphill climb through the town, but it's well worth the energy (plus you will already be part way to the amazing views of the village from the castle)! When the doors to the church are open, visitors can step inside to see the "White Madonna" which gives the church its nickname of Sanctuary of the White Madonna (Santuario della Madonna Bianca).

What have you learned about a place that you've visited that makes you want to return?

We were two months late for the "Feast of the Madonna Bianca" that is held annually in Porto Venere, Italy and I now want to plan a visit for August 17th! It is said that flowers adorn the streets and thousands of candles light up the entire village - all of the way out into the Bay of Poets. The icon of the White Madonna is carried through the streets in a processional which culminates at the church.
