Austria | Durnstein | Danube River | River Cruise | Gate 1 Travel | Monarch Queen | Wachau Valley | Durnstein Castle Ruins | Wachau World Heritage Trail
The almost 112 mile long Wachau World Heritage Trail has a total of 14 legs which, among other sights, pass by castles, fortresses and ruins. Even when sailing on a Danube River cruise, you can get a taste of the trail when docked in the village of Durnstein, Austria. A 30-minute uphill hike from the dock leads to the ruins of Durnstein Castle which was made famous because of the Legend of Richard the Lionheart.

We started our day off in Durnstein, Austria with a hike led by the Activity Director on the Monarch Queen river boat. After a stroll along the Danube River, we made the uphill trek to the ruins of Durnstein Castle. As promised, we got some exercise and were able to enjoy some incredible views!
