A Taste of Russia at Tallinn's Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Construction of the imposing Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was completed in 1900 when the country of Estonia was ruled by Russia. The Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on Toompea Hill in the Old Town of Tallinn. The architecture and decor both inside and out are amazing as are the sounds of the 11 bells that play before each service in the cathedral.

Do you enjoy visiting "Old Towns"?

Our first big trip of 2016, the year that we retired, included back-to-back cruises departing from Copenhagen. One of our port days was spent in Tallinn, Estonia. We loved stepping back in time to explore the Old Town of Tallinn. One of the most memorable buildings was the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The cathedral dates back to the time when the country of Estonia was under Russian rule.

What are some of your favorite old towns?
