Upon completion of the construction project in 1996, the Petronas Twin Towers ranked as the tallest buildings in the world. Owned by the Petronas Group, an oil and gas company, the distinction of being the world's tallest building was lost in 2004 to Taipei 101. Since 2010, the Petronas Towers have ranked third in height with the completion of Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Petronas Twin Towers still maintains the record of the tallest twin towers in the world.
