Egypt | Cairo | Giza | Giza Plateau | Great Sphinx of Giza | Great Sphinx of Khafra | Sphinx | Ancient History | Bucket List
With the body of a lion and the head of a human, the Great Sphinx of Giza stands guard over the pyramids of Kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure on the Giza Plateau. It is believed that the Sphinx was carved at about the same time as what is known today as the Great Pyramid (Khafre) and shares features from the king's face. Today, both the nose of the sphinx and the pharaonic beard (which may have been a later addition to the statue) are missing.
