Egypt | Cairo | Giza | Grand Egyptian Museum | GEM | King Tut | Tutankhamen | Egyptian Artifacts | Archaeology | Ancient Egypt
Upon the official opening (possibly in late 2024), the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) will be the largest archaeological museum in the world. Construction began on Giza's GEM in 2005, but completion has been delayed multiple times since. Guided tours of the few open areas (grand hall, grand staircase and exterior) have been offered since late 2023. The official exhibit areas are expected to remain off-limits (except to a select few guides, etc.) until the official grand opening.

We learned about the Grand Egyptian Museum about a year ago and had originally arranged a tour that included time in what was to be the newly opened museum. A lot changed during that year - our original plan (a cruise) was cancelled due to the conflict in the Middle East and the museum still hasn't fully opened. We still enjoyed exploring the few areas of the GEM that are currently open to the public. Definitely want to return whenever the museum is officially open!
And if travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it's a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end. - Pico Iyer
