Although there is some evidence that Castle Guimaraes can be traced back to around the year 950, most believe that remnants of the castle date to the late 11th century. The eight towers were added even later but by the early 16th century, the castle was converted to a prison as it was no longer used for defensive purposes. It was in 1881 when the castle was recognized as a National Monument and a major restoration project was completed between 1936 and 1940.
