Although there is some evidence that Castle Guimaraes can be traced back to around the year 950, most believe that remnants of the castle date to the late 11th century. The eight towers were added even later but by the early 16th century, the castle was converted to a prison as it was no longer used for defensive purposes. It was in 1881 when the castle was recognized as a National Monument and a major restoration project was completed between 1936 and 1940.

On our return from Braga to Porto in northern Portugal, we made a stop in the city of Guimaraes. First up was time to explore the defensive monument of Castelo de Guimarães.
Once you have travelled, the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers. The mind can never break off from the journey. - Pat Conroy
