A visit to the birthplace of Portugal should be on the itinerary of anyone exploring northern Portugal. The city of Guimaraes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of the most memorable pedestrian friendly historic centers. It was nearly 900 years ago when Portugal was officially founded (1128) but the regular maintenance of the city makes it appear much newer.

After exploring Guimaraes Castle, we had time to stroll through the country's oldest city. With its interesting architecture, plenty of outdoor cafes and a part of the route followed by pilgrims along Rua de Santa Maria, learning a bit of the city's history was quite interesting.
