Originally built in the 12th century, "Schwanstein Castle" suffered extensive damage during several wars. In 1832, the castle ruins were purchased by the father of King Ludwig II (who was only 18 at the time). After several years of rebuilding, Hohenschwangau Castle became a summer residence for the royal family and the childhood home of the boy who became King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

We didn't get to tour the interior of Schloss Hohenschwangau during our day trip, but we did enjoy a great view of the castle from the grounds of Neuschwanstein Castle.
