A Walk through Jambo Spice Farm

It's hard to believe that it was back in the 1500s that spices and herbs were first introduced to Zanzibar. In addition to tourism, they remain a very important part of the island's economy. A walking tour through Jambo Spice Farm is a great way to learn about (and smell and taste) the variety of crops grown. Following the tour, it's time to taste some of the fruits grown in house and, for those who choose, a traditional swahili lunch can also be purchased as part of a package.

How good are you at identifying scents?

Our guide, Aiysha (In Zanzibar by Aiysha), had us sniffing spices and fruits including cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, nutmeg, orange, pepper, turmeric and vanilla as we walked through Jambo Spice Farm. Although we would grade ourselves an "F" at identifying the scents as we walked through the farm, it was a very interesting and informative tour. (Maybe we can blame our lack of sniffing skills on being jet lagged!)
