Hiking and History at the Karangahake Gorge

The Karangahake Gorge is found on the southern edge of the Coromandel Peninsula. After you pull into the parking area for what looks to be a nice roadside park, you'll find that it is so much more. From the historical evidence (including tunnels) of an old gold mining town to the beautiful scenery, it will be hard to leave to get on with your plan for the rest of the day!

Do you ever change your plan for the day when you see something unexpected?

Our day of exploring the Coromandel Peninsula was full of unplanned changes! Not far from our first stop, we passed what looked like a nice park. We decided to make an unplanned stop to check it out, and spent more time than we expected. The Karangahake Gorge had some fun hiking trails mixed with history. So wish we had more time to spend!
