Below today's modern city of Alexandria, Egypt, the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa ("Mound of Shards") were discovered in 1900 AD. The three level structure stretches about 100 feet below ground with tombs housing the remains of up to 300 people. It is believed that the structure began as a private burial chamber and later became a public cemetery for both Greeks and Romans. Bones of both horses and humans have been found in the catacombs.
