The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, was officially dedicated on October 28, 1886, just over 100 years after the country's 100th birthday. Built in Paris, the statue was shipped in crates to its new home known today as Liberty Island (formerly Bedloe's Island). Lady Liberty, as she is commonly called, holds a torch high above her head in her right hand and a tablet inscribed with the date July 4, 1776 in her left hand. Along with Ellis Island, Liberty Island is a United States National Monument.

We boarded the Celebrity Summit in Cape Liberty (Bayonne, New Jersey) for our seven day cruise to Bermuda. Shortly after departing from the port, we sailed through New York Bay passing by the Statue of Liberty.

Fun facts: The statue's original name was "Liberty Enlightening the World". Based on the agreement between the states of New York and New Jersey, the official state lines is the midpoint of the New York Bay. Lady Liberty is located on the New Jersey side of the bay, however because of another agreement between the two states, Liberty Island is officially located in New York!
