Escape the Walled City of Rhodes to Explore Mandraki Harbor

According to ancient legend, the Colossus of Rhodes (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) once towered over Rhodes, Greece from what is now known as Mandraki Harbor. While there is no statue today, the refurbished remains of three medieval windmills (circa 1600s) plus the Fortress of St. Nicholas (1400s) are awaiting visitors who choose to escape the walled city. Once a military port, rather than seeing warships, it is expensive yachts that sail into and out of the harbor!

What ancient structures have fascinated you?

For some unknown reason, I am amazed by ancient windmills. Not sure if it's because they can be picturesque or because they were designed without all of the technology we have today (or both).

During our port day in Rhodes, exploring Mandraki Harbor was on our list - for the windmills, the fortress, the nearby beach and just being near the water. It was also fun to imagine where the Colossus of Rhodes may have stood hundreds of years before our time.

Do you have any favorite ancient cities or structures?
