Tanzania | Mara | Serengeti National Park | Mara River | Safari | Game Drive | Great Migration | Wildebeest | Crocodile | Mara River Crossing | Maasai Wanderings
Year after year, herds of wildebeest risk life and limb as they move from the northern Serengeti back down toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The wild animals cross the Mara River in "waves" - each group carefully choosing the location that they believe they can safely cross. After all, the water is flowing (sometimes quite rapidly) and plenty of predators are in search of their next meal. Sadly, not all are successful in their journey - some drown, some become the next meal for a crocodile patiently waiting in the river, others become prey for lions shortly after making their way across and still others get spooked for one reason or another and return to their starting point.
