Egypt | Lower Egypt | Cairo | Saqqara | Memphis | Mit Rahina | Day Trip | Archaeology | Ancient Egypt | Museum | Ancient Ruins | Colossus | Ramses II
The ancient Egyptian city of Memphis stood on what is now known as the town of Mit Rahina. All that is left of the capital of Lower Egypt (and the country's first capital after the "Two Lands" were united) is an open-air museum and important archaeological site. The Memphis Museum is now home to some interesting ancient ruins including two statues of Ramses II. Because the base of one of the statues, its feet and a section of legs are broken off, a colossus of the former Egyptian King lies on its back in a building with two-level viewing areas.

We wrapped up our first day of sightseeing in Egypt at what is now known as the Memphis Museum. Although much of the area is in ruins, there are definitely some cool statues that have been unearthed. Check out the huge lying down statue of Ramses II.
