Construction of the Duomo di Milano, one of the largest Catholic cathedrals in the world, began in the year 1386. It was nearly 600 years later (in 1965) when construction was deemed complete. (Although the structure itself is complete, the Duomo will almost always be undergoing some sort of restoration to preserve it for generations to come.) Due to the Duomo's lengthy construction period, a large number of architects and artists influenced the completed product.
