New Zealand | Waikaretu | Nikau Cave and Cafe | Caving | Glowworms | Stalactites | Stalagmites | Guided Tour
A tour of Nikau Cave is nothing like your "normal" cave tour. Yes, the cave has stalactites and stalagmites, but seeing them requires getting down and dirty. "Down" on your hands and knees as you crawl 20+ yards (or for taller folks, an elbow scoot is more in order as the roof is too low for a normal crawl). Make sure to wear clothes and shoes that can get "dirty", as they definitely will!

What cave tour has been your most memorable?
There's no question about the answer to this question for us. Our recent tour of Nikau Cave in Waikaretu on New Zealand's North Island wins our most unforgettable award. In addition to crawling (yes, crawling through wet, muddy and dark sections of the cave), we got to see glowworms! So glad we brought clothes to change into so we could enjoy pizza at the cafe after our tour.
