Portugal | Porto | Historical City Center | Sao Bento Train Station | Saint Benedict | Azuelo Tiles | Architecture | UNESCO
Construction began on what is now known as the Sao Bento (Saint Benedict) Railway Station in historic Porto in 1904. The station opened in 1916 and is one of the most beautiful in the country. The station attracts visitors who have no plans to travel by train - they just want to see the inside architecture and decor. The walls of the station's lobby are adorned with murals created by approximately 20,000 Portuguese tiles (azulejos) which depict scenes from the history of Portugal.

Surprisingly, one of the most recommended places to visit in Portugal is the main train station - and not for transportation! Luckily it was not too far from the loft where we were staying. Once inside, it was obvious why people love it - the tile work is beautiful!
