From Riomaggiore: Exploring Cinque Terre from South to North

Of the five villages which make up Italy's Cinque Terre National Park, Riomaggiore is the furthest south. By train, Riomaggiore is only about 2 minutes from Manarola, the closest village and 15 minutes from the furthest village of Monterosso. (It's doable, but much longer for those wanting to hike between villages.) Riomaggiore is among the largest of the villages and is full of the iconic pastel colored buildings terraced along the coastline.

When exploring Italy, how do you typically get from city to city?

One of the things that we love about traveling in Europe is the fabulous train network. Trains are frequent and reasonably priced. Tickets are easy to purchase - either on line or at the train stations.

We chose Monterosso al Mare for our launching point during our days exploring Cinque Terre. Although Riomaggiore is the furthest village from Monterosso, it is still only a 15 minute train ride. With trains available every 30 minutes, it's so easy and fast to get between villages - we even delayed having breakfast until we got to Riomaggiore!

Have you ever traveled using the trains in Europe?
