Riomaggiore View: Sanctuary of our Lady of Montenero

Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montenero sits high up on a hill overlooking the Cinque Terre village of Riomaggiore. Originally built in the eleventh century and refurbished multiple times, the only way to reach the sanctuary is on foot. The rewards for taking on the uphill hike are the amazing views. No matter which side of the building you choose, you'll enjoy a bird's eye view of the sea, the vineyards and, of course, Riomaggiore.

How far will you hike for a good view?

The seaside fishing villages of Cinque Terre are famous for the picturesque buildings standing on the terraced cliff sides. Painted in a variety of colors, these homes overlook the Ligurian Sea. Some of the best views throughout Cinque Terre are from high up on hills within each of the villages.

We hiked up from the harbor in Riomaggiore to the Sanctuary of our Lady of Montenero. We couldn't go inside, but we walked all around to see both the church and the amazing views of the village and the surrounding sea. I wouldn't classify the hike as "easy", but the views from above were something we will definitely remember from our visit.

Are you willing to hike uphill for a good view?
