Missouri | Kansas City | Penn Valley Park | Statues | Scout | Sculpture | Sioux on Horseback | Viewpoint
The Scout, a sculpture of a Sioux scout on horseback, has become a mascot for Kansas City. Originally intended to be a temporary exhibit in the city, it is said that the residents fell in love with the statue and raised the money needed to purchase it. The Scout now stands atop a hill in Penn Valley Park with an awesome view of the city.

Does your home city have a mascot?
Our original quest at Penn Valley Park was to find the statue that we later learned is named "The Scout". The sculpture has been located on a hill within the park since 1921, yet it has quite an interesting backstory. The statue won a Gold Medal at the 1915 San Francisco Panama-Pacific Exposition. Following the exposition, the Scout made what was to be a temporary stop in Kansas City on its way back to the sculptor who lived on the east coast. Needless to say, it never made it all of the way back east! It is now known as a mascot for Kansas City.
What other cities do you know of that have a mascot?
