From Fire to Chimney Tree: Shrine of the Redwoods

The Shrine of the Redwoods (aka Shrine Drive Thru Tree) is located on the Avenue of the Giants in Myers Flat, California. Sadly, it was fire that originally hollowed out the drive-thru tree over a hundred years ago. (Redwood trees that have been hollowed by fire are known as chimney trees.) In addition to driving through the trunk, you can drive your car on to a fallen redwood log. There's also two tree houses and more which are fun for the youngsters!

Would you want to drive through two trees on the same trip?

After getting to Redwood National Park, we realized that there was another scenic stop that we missed on our north bound drive. It's a good thing that we had already planned to retrace our drive as we headed from the Redwoods back to the south.

The Shrine Drive-Thru Tree, located on the Avenue of the Giants, is thought to be 3,000 years old and the oldest of the state's three drive-thru trees. When it's not raining, kids will love the tree house village and walk-through tree stump!
