Sitting outside a McDonald's restaurant in Taupo, New Zealand is a 20-seater Douglas DC-3 airplane. Originally serving as a passenger plane 80 years ago, the plane then operated as a crop duster until the mid-1980s. The plane then sat outside a car dealership in Taupo. In 1990, the property (including the aircraft) was sold to McDonald's. The plane was painted to represent its new ownership and restaurant goers have been able to dine inside ever since.

What unique restaurant experiences have you had?
When traveling, I love visiting non-chain restaurants to (hopefully) sample some unique local dishes. Although McDonald's doesn't qualify as local, the restaurant in Taupo is certainly unique. We drove past the "airplane seating" outside of the restaurant on our first night and made it our mission to return for photos before we left the city.
The pleasure we derive from journeys is perhaps dependent more on the mindset with which we travel than on the destination we travel to. - Alain de Botto
