Imagining a Performance at the Roman Colosseum

The Roman Colosseum (also referred to as the Flavian Amphitheater) has been standing for over 1,900 years! Crowds of up to 85,000 people gathered to watch shows and games including wild animal fights, gladiator combats and possibly even sea battles. Although much of the Colosseum has been destroyed through the years, it is still near the top of the list of Rome's most popular tourist attractions.

Do you enjoy seeing ancient Roman structures?

Since we love cruising, we have had many opportunities to explore Rome either before, during and after cruises. We always tried to see different sites than during our previous visit. One of our most memorable was in 2013 when we toured the Roman Colosseum. We reserved the Underground Tour which was a small group tour (just the two of us and one other couple). We learned so much about the history and uses of the colosseum plus got to explore places inside that most people don't get to see.

Fun fact: In addition to age and natural disasters being responsible for today's Colosseum appearance, looters also played a role. For many years, parts of the amphitheater were stolen and used as materials for building other structures in the city.

Of every place that you have visited in Rome, what has been your favorite?
