Get Up Close and Personal to Cliff Dwellings on Island Trail
Located in Flagstaff, Arizona, you'll find a site that has been designated as a National Monument for over 100 years (since 1915). A hike upon the one-mile long Island Trail inside Walnut Canyon National Monument takes you back more than 700 years. With over 700 stairs, the hike is not for the faint of heart! Those willing to accept the challenge can get an up close and personal view of cliff dwelling rooms occupied in years gone by.

We definitely increased our heart rate at Walnut Canyon National Monument - a completely unplanned stop! As we were driving west on I-40 to Flagstaff to return our rental car, I noticed a roadside sign for the monument. Since we had some time, we agreed to make a visit. We didn't realize that the hike to see the cliff dwellings would include over 700 stairs. It was quite easy hiking down into the valley, but climbing back up was much more difficult!
