Ramses II, regarded as one of the country's greatest pharaohs, ruled over Ancient Egypt between 1279 BC and 1213 BC. He commissioned a temple, Abu Simbel, which was completed in 1244 BC after 20 years of construction. Four huge statues representing Ramses II seated on his throne and wearing the crowns of both Upper and Lower Egypt flank the temple's entrance.

Social Media Description

It was an early morning wake-up call (before 4:00 AM), but we had time to nap in the car during our drive. Arriving at the UNESCO site of Abu Simbel was definitely worth the journey!

Fun fact: Twice each year there is a festival held at the Great Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel. The Abu Simbel Sun Festival has been celebrated by thousands of people each October 22 and February 22 for over 3,000 years. Because of the angle of the temple, the sun lights three of the four statues (all but Phat, the God of darkness) inside the temple's entrance corridor.
