Egypt | Abu Simbel | UNESCO | Nile River Cruise | King Ramses II | Great Temple | Ancient Egypt | Egyptology | Aswan High Dam
The larger (or main) of the two temples at Egypt's Abu Simbel is frequently referred to as the Great Temple. Located on the shores of Lake Nasser (south of Aswan), the Temple of Ramses II marks the southern boundary of the Egyptian Empire during the rule under the king known as Ramses the Great. The temples are carved into a mountainside with four of the largest surviving statues of the ancient Egyptian times surrounding the doorway of the Great Temple.

Social Media Description
We initially passed on the optional excursion to Abu Simbel. So glad we changed our minds - it was an extra cost but who knows if we'll ever return to this area of the world again!
Fun fact: Due to impending flooding from construction of the Aswan High Dam, both temples at Abu Simbel were cut into pieces, stored and then perfectly reassembled at this nearby location. Some of the individual pieces weighed 20 or more tons and the project took almost five years to complete.
