Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as the Musoleum of Hadrian, is a National Museum found on the banks of Rome's Tiber River. Construction of the fortress is believed to have started in the year 123 AD. From the dungeon below to the rooftop terrace above, Castel Sant'Angelo has an interesting history. What started as a tomb of Emperor Hadrian became a portion of the walls surrounding Rome and later a defensive structure, a prison and a residence for Popes before becoming a National Museum.

Even after multiple visits to Rome, this was our first time to explore Castel Sant'Angelo. It was the perfect addition to our day that started in the Vatican City.
Fun fact: If there is ever an attack, a long corridor allows the Pope to go from Vatican City to the fortress for safety!
