Known locally as the Voladores de Papantla, five men perform the "Dance of the Flyers" each hour when cruise ship passengers are visiting the Costa Maya cruise port. The dance dates back to ancient Mesoamerican times and is recognized by UNESCO as an 800 year old ritual. The dance starts with five men climbing a 100-foot tall pole. While the musician stays at the top, the remaining men "fly" 13 laps around the pole!
