South Dakota | Chamberlain | Chamberlain Rest Area | Dignity | Concrete Tipi | Missouri River Overlook

There's More to this Rest Area Than Just Resting!

A gift to the state of South Dakota from a local family, the sculpture stands tall on a ridge over the Missouri River. Dignity was sculpted to honor the state's Lakota and Dakota people during the year of the state's 125th anniversary. The sculptor was intent on ensuring that Dignity's face was perfect so he used three different Native American models while creating the amazing piece of art.

Do you enjoy gazing at outdoor sculptures?

What was supposed to be a very quick restroom and stretch break ended up taking more time! Almost immediately after stopping at the Chamberlain Rest Area, we saw the imposing Dignity sculpture and knew that we should take a closer look.

Dignity was definitely the highlight of our stop, but there's also paved walkways which lead to both a Missouri River Overlook and a concrete tipi which is included on the National Register of Historic Places. Sure wish that we had more time to also explore the free onsite Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.

Would the Chamberlain Rest Area be a place that you would want to stop at?
