Located on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, the Lerai Forest is home to a variety of animal species. In the Maasai language, the word "Lerai" refers to the acacia trees found in this and other forests. The bull elephants who frequent the Lerai Forest destroy these old trees by pulling off the yellow bark. Once the bark grows back, the elephants are at it again!

Little did we know that the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge was so close to the Lerai Forest. This forest is the home of huge bull elephants. Almost immediately after driving out of the grounds of the lodge, we spotted what appeared to be a large, fresh pile of elephant dung. We began our search for the culprit, and just around a corner came upon this massive beast!
