One of only 7 steam clocks around the world stands in Gastown, located in the northeast quadrant of Vancouver's downtown. Finding the clock is usually quite easy - just look for the street corner with the greatest number of people standing about. Housed inside the clock's base is a small steam engine which provides the power to move the pendulums (which, in turn, move the time forward) as well as to sound the chimes (or whistles) every 15 minutes.

Have you ever seen one of the seven steam clocks in the world?

The Vancouver Steam Clock was another "must see" on our list of tourist attractions that we hoped to find. We actually returned to the clock on multiple occasions as it was being serviced on our first midday visit and still not working when we returned later the same day. Fortunately, the clock was back in operation on our third visit so we did get to watch the "top of the hour show"!

Fun fact: It is said that one of the reasons for the clock was to hopefully prevent those who were living on the streets of Vancouver from making their bed on the warm grate through which the steam rises to power the clock.
