When many people think of first responders, they think of the fire, police and medical personnel in their local community. It can sometimes be easy to forget that there are first responders all around the world dedicated to the well being of people everywhere. When on a cruise ship traveling being continents, a medical emergency may require that an individual be airlifted by helicopter in order to get the help they need.

When was the last time that you thanked a first responder?
The first morning of our six days of sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from Madeira to Fort Lauderdale, we were awakened to the sound of a helicopter. We actually spotted both a plane and a helicopter circling our cruise ship just as the sun was rising. I can't even imagine how scary the medical emergency was for the individual being airlifted and his or her family. Events like this make me even more thankful for all of the first responders dedicated to serving others.
