With three different paths ranging from just over 1/3 of a mile to 1 1/4 miles, spend an hour exploring Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve before enjoying the "Mud Spa". A geothermal walk through the reserve will take you safely through the steaming lands, some small eruptions, a mud volcano plus a hot waterfall. When staff is available, you can even learn about and test your skills at Maori wood carving.

When we arrived at Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve and Mud Spa, we had our choice of exploring (aka walking or hiking) the grounds or taking advantage of the "mud spa". We forced ourselves to walk the entire path around the reserve before enjoying our mud baths and geothermal soaking! It is said that Maori warriors used mud and water from the same sources to help themselves heal after battle!
