Czech Republic | Prague | Jewish Quarter | Josefov | UNESCO | Prague Visitor Pass | Old Jewish Cemetery | Synagogue | History | World War II
Many locals refer to Prague's Jewish Quarter as Josefov ("Joseph's Town") in recognition of Emperor Joseph II who granted equal rights to Jews. The area, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, is currently home to six synagogues, the Old Jewish Cemetery and more. There are upwards of 12,000 visible tombstones in the cemetery with thousands more buried and no longer visible. It was an old rule that prevented Jews from being buried elsewhere that caused graves to be piled on top of each other.

We missed out on seeing much of Prague's Jewish Quarter because the day that we planned for exploring Old Town was a Jewish Holiday and many sites were closed. We did make time on our second day to at least spend some time walking through the Old Jewish Cemetery (also the last place where we used our Prague Visitor Pass).
