Construction of Montaza Palace, located on the Mediterranean Sea in Alexandria, began in 1892 for Egypt's royal family. The complex, now owned by the government of Egypt, started as a royal family escape for hunting and vacations and later was used as a summer residence. In the 1930s, a second bigger palace and the royal gardens were added. Although entrance is not available into the palaces, the beautiful gardens and beach are open to the public.
